FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Michigan State softball team continued play at the FGCU Spring Break Invitational Saturday. The Spartans fell 5-1 to Fairfield in first game, and 8-0 against No. 13 DePaul later in the afternoon. MSU concludes tournament action at 1 p.m. Sunday vs. Florida Gulf Coast.
Two infield starters did not play on Saturday for Michigan State (4-5) due to injuries.
Sophomore Shae Bass started the first game for the Spartans, giving up three runs in the first inning, but finished strong with back-to-back strikeouts to leave a runner on base. Freshman Lauren Kramer relieved Bass in the middle of the third inning and pitched the rest of the game. She allowed two runs on three hits and posted two strikeouts.
Following the three Fairfield runs in the top of the first, sophomore Lindsey Hansen started a comeback in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to left field with two outs. It was her team-leading third home run of the season and her second in as many games.
Bass retired all three batters she faced in the second inning, and sophomore Jessica Bracamonte recorded MSU's only hit in the second. The inning ended with three runners left on base.
Fairfield added runs in the sixth and seventh to put the game out of reach, posting a 5-1 win.
Senior Megan Hair started in the circle in game two against No. 13 DePaul, pitching all seven innings and recording two strikeouts. She leads the team with nine strikeouts this season.
DePaul recorded one run on one hit in the first to take an early lead. The Spartans responded with two hits to start their first at-bat. Hansen and Kramer both recorded singles up the middle, and freshman Melanie Bensema posted another single in the second.
The Blue Demons put the game out of reach in the third inning, notching five runs to take a 6-0 lead. Senior Kara Weigle hit a single in the third and freshman Ali Grant tallied a double to left field, but that was as close as the Spartans came as DePaul tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning.
NOTES:
Freshman Lori Padilla recorded her first career hit with a single in the fourth inning against Fairfield...MSU will meet Florida Gulf Coast for the second time of the season on Sunday. Florida Gulf Coast won the first meeting, 11-7.
