ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Sixth-ranked Michigan topped Michigan State in five innings, 10-0, Friday afternoon at Alumni Field. Megan Hair gave up a game-ending grand slam, as the Wolverines tacked on five runs in the fifth for the win. The intrastate rivals meet again Saturday in East Lansing for a 12 p.m. game at Old College Field.
The Spartans (25-23, 7-8 Big Ten) were highlighted by first baseman Lindsey Hansen, who went 2-for-2 with a single and double - her second career multi-hit game. Nikki Nicosia also came up with a lead-off single in the third. UM's Nikki Nemitz earned the shutout win, throwing the entire game and tallying six strikeouts.
Samantha Findlay roped out her 17th home run of the year with a solo long ball to left field, giving Michigan a 1-0 initial lead in the bottom of the second.
A big third for the Wolverines (42-4, 14-1) extended their lead to 5-0 as they scored four runs on five hits. After two runs scored, Kelly Confer was brought into the circle for MSU, replacing Shae Bass. Bass threw two innings and gave up four earned runs.
With a runner on first and no outs, Confer forced the next two Wolverines to put easy balls in play for outs, but Michigan chalked up two more RBI singles before the inning would end.
