ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Fourth-ranked Michigan State (12-3, 3-1 Big Ten) suffered its first Big Ten loss on Friday, falling to Michigan, 1-0. It was the first time the Spartans had been shutout this season, and first time since Sept. 30, 2007 when they fell to Wake Forest, 2-0. Junior Elissa Unger (Reading, Pa.) made four saves in goal for the Spartans.
Michigan's Zara Saydjari scored the game's only goal off a scramble in front of the net at 28:36. Shots were even at 4-4 in the first half and the Spartans held a 3-2 advantage in penalty corners. Michigan State outshot the Wolverines 4-3 in the second half, and held a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners.
"The team seemed to come out flat from the get-go," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "We had opportunities, but it's hard to get the result if you don't play as a team."
The Spartans host Ohio in a non-conference game on Saturday at noon.
