EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State (13-3, 3-1) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 2-1 double overtime win over Ohio University on Saturday. Freshman Chantae Miller (East Amherst, N.Y.) recorded both goals for the Spartans and tallied her second multi-goal game of the season. It was the third overtime game for the Spartans this season, who have yet to drop a game in extra time.
The Spartans opened the game with a tally at the seven minute mark. Junior Angela Pagura (Columbus, Ohio) made a centering pass from down low on the right side of the goal cage to Miller, who buried the ball. Ohio evened the score at 53:29 with a goal from Rachelle Coetzee off a penalty corner. The second half ended with Michigan State holding a 16-5 advantage in shots, and recording six corners to Ohio's three.
Michigan State held the Bobcats without a shot in both overtimes. The Spartans recorded seven shots and held a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners during extra time.
Miller scored her 11th goal of the year at 96:19 off a penalty corner, with an assist to sophomore Joelle van Ierland (Den Dolder, Netherlands).
"It was a great comeback over a tough Ohio University team," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "The Spartans are now back on the right track as they look to finish the regular season on a strong note. It seems that we've got everything in our control regarding Big Ten conference play and finishing for a regional number one seed. The team came out strong today and showed they really wanted it with 25 minutes of extra time."
Miller's two goals propelled her into the team lead for points (31). She is second on the team in goals with 11, behind junior Floor Rijpma (Bunnik, Netherlands), who has 13.
Ohio goalkeeper Jessie Miller posted 10 saves in goal and junior Elissa Unger (Reading, Pa.) made two saves for Michigan State. The Spartans outshot Ohio 23-5 in the game, and recorded 11 penalty corners to Ohio's four.
Michigan State hosts Iowa in a Big Ten contest on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. The game will air as a tape-delay broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
