The Spartans started slowly in the first half, allowing Yale to get the first goal and take the 1-0 lead. Ashley McCauley sent a cross pass from the left side of the field, as Cat Lindroth finished the goal for her second tally of the year at 10:34.
"Yale was strong and aggressive to start the game," said MSU head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "After a slow start, we regrouped to take charge of the game. Starting halfway through the first half, we were dominating the game."
Becky Manning's seventh goal of the season at 22:11 evened the game at 1-1. Kathryn Elenz-Martin then played a big part in putting the Spartans up for good. She set up Jantine Steinmetz for the game-winning goal at 26:07. Elenz-Martin then scored two of her own before the end of the first half, both of which were tap ins from in front, as MSU took a 4-1 lead into the break.
"She was everywhere today," proclaimed van de Kerkhof about Elenz-Martin. "She continues to prove that she is a very valuable player for the team."
MSU added two more goals in the second half. Michelle Ciliberti scored on a breakaway at 56:49 to make it 5-1. Jeamie Deacon completed the day's scoring with her sixth of the year at 69:50.
The Spartans dominated the final statistics with a 33-3 edge in shots and all 12 penalty corners in the game. The team and goalkeeper Elissa Unger, who made two saves, each improved to 7-1 on the season with the win. Yale goalie Charlotte Goins turned aside 15 shots for the Bulldogs.
