EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State rower Kate Burdick has been named to the First-Team 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large District IV Team, announced Wednesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for the prestigious award, a player must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 in the classroom, be a starter or key reserve, and be in sophomore athletic and academic standing. Burdick becomes the first Spartan rower to receive first-team accolades, and follows Stacey Hicks who earned second-team honors in 2004.
"Kate does a real nice job of balancing academics and rowing, and she does well in both," said MSU head coach Matt Weise. "She does a great job representing Michigan State and the rowing program, and I'm proud that she was honored."
Burdick, a junior in the Michigan State varsity eight, is a kinesiology major and maintains a 4.0 GPA. The Ann Arbor, Mich., native has spent the past two seasons in the varsity eight, this season rowing in bow seat of the boat that placed third at the Big Ten Championships and finished 10th at the South/Central Regional. The award follows closely behind Burdick's selection as a 2007 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Scholar Athlete on Monday.
ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District and All-America honorees are nominated, voted on, and awarded by members of CoSIDA.
