Michigan State Rowing Strong In Races Against Indiana

LAINGSBURG, Mich. - Despite windy conditions, Michigan State rowing defeated Indiana in four of five events as it concluded the afternoon session of the Big Ten Invitational.
The novice eight went undefeated for the day, picking up its second win of the day against the crew from Indiana. The Spartan crew of Vicky Grygar, Clare Adamus, Alex Maibusch, Dhanielle Tobias, Jessica Vandenberg, Katie Hood, Megan Kursik, Amanda Dunnill and Daryl Lederle crossed the line in 7:53.10, easily defeating the Hoosiers who finished in 8:15.40.
In the next race, the Spartan second and third varsity fours each fell to the crew from Indiana (8:44.57). The second varsity four of Bridget Curry, Rachel Garabedian, Jenny Stanton, Emily Huddleston and Nicolette Clifford from Michigan State came in second place with a 9:08.77, while the third four finished in 9:32.47.
The Spartans got back on track in the varsity four, as Michigan State (Allison Duffy, Catie Tyzo, Victoria Woodard, Julie Ward, Nancy Diehl) took the lead after the first 500 meters and continued to push through Indiana to finish with over a length of open water. MSU posted an 8:46.60, while Indiana came across in 8:56.80.
In the next race down the course, the MSU second varsity eight also picked up its second win of the day as the crew of coxswain Tamara Yantovksy, Sarah Schmidt, Jenna Peters, Michelle Mussett, Emily Regan, Kate Taylor, Danica Bevan, Ashley Wenneman and Lauren Gamble defeated Indiana by over a length of open water. Battling the wind, the Spartans finished in 7:50.35, while Indiana came across the line in 8:02.65.
The No. 20-ranked Spartan varsity eight of coxswain Katie Bitz, Anne Cowan, Joanna Brown, Roz Bialczak, Kate Burdick, Sarah Kreft, Erika Shaw, Ashley Peach and Paula Thoms took on Indiana in the final race of the day. The MSU squad gained momentum throughout the race and finished with two lengths of open water. MSU completed the race in 7:24.94.
Michigan State will close out the regular season on April 21 in Boston, Mass., as the Spartans are set to face Harvard and Yale in the morning and Boston University in the afternoon.
