Spartans Conclude FAU Tournament With 8-6 Win Against UMass

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Michigan State softball team (15-12) concluded play at the FAU Parents Weekend Tournament with an 8-6 victory over UMass (10-11-1) on Sunday. Sophomore Kara Weigle led the Spartans with three hits and four RBI, while sophomore Gina Mondo and junior Jessica LeFevre each tallied two runs in the victory.
Senior pitcher Rachel Turney (4-5) tossed 3.1 innings in the circle, allowing five hits and three earned runs in her 13th start of the season for the Green and White. Junior reliever Lesley Noel (3-1) allowed two hits and two earned runs in 1.2 innings, and sophomore Megan Hair (6-6) earned the victory, allowing one hit and one earned run in 2.0 innings of work.
Mondo and junior outfielder Traci Nicosia each contributed two hits for the Spartans, while Nikki Nicosia, Caitlin Mahoney, Nicole Mercado and LeFevre each posted one hit at the plate.
MSU scored two runs in each of the first two innings behind an RBI single in the first from Traci Nicosia and a two-run double in the second by Weigle. UMass scored one run in the first and second, and tied the game at 4-4 with two runs in the top of the fourth.
The Minutewomen took a 6-4 lead with two runs in the sixth, but the Spartans answered, posting four runs in the bottom half of the frame behind consecutive RBI singles by Nikki Nicosia and Weigle. Hair downed the side in order in the top half of the seventh to close the 8-6 Spartan win.
MSU continues tournament play at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational, March 23-25. The Spartans open weekend action against Purdue, Saturday at Noon.
