EAST LANSING - Mich. - Three Michigan State field hockey players were selected to the 2007 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I All-Region Team on Wednesday, Nov. 14. Sophomore Jeamie Deacon and sophomore Floor Rijpma were named First-Team All-Region, while freshman Jantine Steinmetz was named to the second team. This marks the ninth time in 22 years that the Spartans have had three or more players selected the the all-region teams in a single season.
Jeamie Deacon was the offensive leader for the Spartans in 2007 scoring a team-leading 32 points on 12 goals and eight assists. Deacon received three Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors this fall, the most for any Spartan in a single season. She was also awarded First-Team All-Big Ten accolades at the 2007 Big Ten Tournament.
Floor Rijpma tied for second on the team in points (31), tied for third in goals (12), and added seven assists on the year. She also earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2007.
Jantine Steinmetz was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Year, and led the Spartans in goals with 15. She added one assist on the year, giving her a total of 31 points, tying her with Rijpma for second on the team. Steinmetz was awarded Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week twice this season.
"It's great for Michigan State to have three players listed on the all-region team," said head coach Rolf van de Kerhof. "But I want them to remember that they are a reflection of their team, and a good season is the result of great players playing together."
The Michigan State field hockey team went 16-6 on the year tying for fifth-most wins in a single season. They advanced the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in school history. MSU lost to No. 2 Wake Forest in the first round of the tournament, 3-2, on Nov. 10.
