EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's rowing team hosted its first races of the season, competing in a 3,200-meter head race against the University of Michigan at Grande River Park Sunday. MSU boats earned top finishes in the quads, doubles and pairs, while the Wolverines won the fours.
"The varsity did a nice job of executing the race plan and keeping good rhythm in the small boats. They will need to risk more if they are going to find similar success when they race the eights this weekend," said head coach Matt Weise.
The finishes in doubles and pairs matched up among the intrastate rivals, as the Spartans took first, second, fourth and fifth, holding Michigan to third and sixth in both events. Michigan State's top time in doubles was 13.11.0 and in pairs was 13.19.0.
The Spartans took first and third in the quads with times of 12.41.0 and 13.31.0, while the Wolverines clocked in at 13.02.0 for second place.
Three boats raced in the fours; the two Michigan boats took first and second place, with 12:47.0 and 13:40.0 times. Michigan State finished third with 13:55.0.
Additionally, both programs raced novice eight boats in the four-minute flights of the 3,200-meter course.
"The novice squad's performance was the culmination of their efforts so far. Overall, they have good speed for this point in the season. The weak spots in their race pieces showed what aspects of racing we need to attack next in practice, and I think we all look forward to progressing this week," said associate head coach Stacey Rippetoe.
The Spartans final fall races will be Sunday, Nov. 4 at the Chicago Head Race in Chicago, Ill. The competition will feature most of the Big Ten schools competing in head races in the morning, followed by 2,000-meter races in the afternoon.
