EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior midfielder Amy Schneider was named Big Ten Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week after an impressive performance against Indiana last weekend. The Big Ten office made the announcement on Monday, Oct. 22.
Schneider helped shut out Indiana, as the Spartans picked up a win on the road over the Hoosiers. Schneider not only helped Michigan State on the defensive side, but she also knocked in a goal in the 2-0 win. The victory improved MSU to 13-4 on the season and 4-1 in Big Ten play.
"Amy is a true leader on and off the field, and she has been the leader of our defensive unit. She supports her teammates and allows the rest of them to be better, especially on defense," said head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "She has really become an all-around player, and is very poised on defense."
Besides her outstanding defense, Schneider also leads the Spartans in assists on the season (12) and has added three goals for a total of 18 points. She currently ranks eighth in the NCAA in assists per game (.71). Schneider was selected, along with teammate Becky Manning, to play in the Senior All-Star game in Maryland. The game will take place at the University of Maryland in College Park at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17.
The Spartans go on the road next Saturday for a Big Ten matchup with Iowa at 4 p.m., then head back to East Lansing to play their last regular-season game, against Kent State, on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m.
