
MSU Field Hockey Suffers 6-1 Loss

PHILADELPHIA - The Michigan State field hockey team fell to No. 6 American 6-1 on Saturday. Michigan State was down 4-0 at the half and was unable to post a goal until late in the second half allowing American to come away with a win.
American (2-2) started the game with two quick goals on corners to take a 2-0 lead. Camila Infante scored the first goal of the game less then five minutes in on an assist from her sister Denise Infante. Camila Infante then added an assist on a corner by Savannah Graybill at 12:30. Michigan State (0-3) was able to hold the score at 2-0 until Kaitlin DeTroia found the back of the net with less than three mintues to go in the half, scoring on a rebound off a save by Michigan State's Elilssa Unger. One minute later, Irene Schickhardt redirected a shot by Denise Infante to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead at the half.
American's offense continued playing well in the second half, getting off seven shots compared to MSU's four. Schickhardt added her second goal at 37:58. Heidi Hershberger also added one for the Eagles at 39:44 to make the American lead 6-0. Following a goalie change, the Spartans began to fight back with senior Ashley Pernicano scoring for Michigan State at 43:45. Michigan State goalkeeper Stephanie Yuhasz had three saves in the last 30:16 of the game to hold American at six goals.
"You don't earn a win by just showing up," said MSU head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. "If we want to win, we are going to have to start working for it. We did that last weekend, but today we didn't."
The Spartans had just six shots while American tallied 13 for the game. MSU will look for its first win tomorrow against Temple at 12 p.m.
