TOLEDO, Ohio - Junior Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) fired a final-round 72 and captured his second consecutive top-five finish with a 72-74-72 - 218 total at the Inverness Intercollegiate on Tuesday. Harmon's tie for fifth was his eighth top five of his career and paced the Michigan State men's golf team to a 300-308-303 - 911 total, good for a tie for 11th-place finish at the par-71, 7,255-yard Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Florida overcame a 12-shot deficit to upend the second-round leader USC. The Gators' 298-295-287 - 880 total edged the Trojans by three shots (289-292-302 - 883), while Texas finished third at 305-286-297 - 888. Kent State (296-303-293 - 892) and Coastal Carolina (300-292-301 - 893) round out the top five.
Sophomore Ryan Brehm (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) finished with a 72-78-76 - 226 total, good for a tie for 26th, while sophomore Nathan Gunthorpe (Ovid, Mich.) posted a 79-73-77 - 229 total for a tie for 41st.
Freshman Randy Hutchison (Traverse City, Mich.) completed his first collegiate tournament with a 77-87-78 - 242 total, while sophomore Brandon Cigna (Novi, Mich.) rounded out the Michigan State lineup, shooting an 87-83-82 - 252 total.
Individually, All-American Matt Every of Florida used a final-round 68 to propel him to the top of the leaderboard. Every's even-par total of 74-71-68 - 213 pushed him past the USC duo of Joshua Wooding and Taylor Wood, who finished in second and third respectively.
The Spartans return to action on Oct. 3-4 in Chicago for the Big Ten/Pac 10 Challenge, hosted by Northwestern University.
