
Spartans In Second After Three Rounds at Big Ten Championships

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - In search of its second straight conference title, the MSU men's golf team sits two strokes off the lead after three rounds at the 2006 Big Ten Championships. Indiana, the 2005 runner-up, has the 54-hole lead at 4-over-par 856 (285-288-283), while the defending champion Spartans enter Sunday's final round in second place at 6-over-par 858 (277-292-289).
Individually, sophomore Ryan Brehm (Mt. Pleasant) leads the 55-player field at 7-under-par 206 (64-72-70), while junior Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) is tied for fifth at 1-under-par 212 (69-71-72). Brehm, who shot a school-record 64 in the first round, has led wire-to-wire and carries a two-stroke advantage over Purdue's Pariya Junhasavasdikul (71-66-71 - 208) into the final round at the par-71 Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill.
Last year, Brehm posted a second-place finish en route to earning Freshman of the Year honors, while Harmon posted a third-place finish and earned First Team All-Big Ten honors.
Host Northwestern lurks in third place at 7-over-par 859 (282-286-291), while Minnesota used a 4-under-par 280 in the third round to climb into fourth place at 10-over-par 862 (288-294-280). Purdue rounds out the top five after posting a three-round total of 12-over-par 864 (284-286-294).
For the third time this season, MSU's lineup features three freshmen. Looking for the first top-20 finish of his career, Steve Cuzzort (Grosse Ile, Mich.) is tied for 19th and leads the trio at 71-76-72 - 219. Grant Tungate (East Lansing, Mich.) is tied for 27th at 73-75-75 - 223, while Randy Hutchison (Traverse City, Mich.) is tied for 31st at 76-74-75 - 225.
