EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State crew coach Matt Weise was named the Central Region Coach of the Year by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association on Friday. Senior Erin Robertson was named first-team All-Central Region, while junior Christen Brown earned a spot on the second team.
"It's nice to be recognized by some great coaches, and there really are a lot of great coaches in the Central Region," said Weise. "It's also great to have two student-athletes recognized. They are great athletes, and these awards are well deserved. They're looking forward to the NCAAs and performing well there."
In his first year leading the Spartans in 2005, Weise directed Michigan State to its first-ever Big Ten Championship, while capturing individual boat championships in the first varsity eight and first varsity four. The Spartans also earned a team bid to the NCAA Championships, where they will compete May 27-29 in Sacramento, Calif. The coach of the year award is intended to recognize a coach from each region that had outstanding success during the 2005 season, or demonstrated great team improvement from the 2004 season, while showing a high level of professionalism and integrity.
Earlier this month, Robertson was recognized as the Big Ten Women's Rowing Athlete of the Year. She sits in the seven seat of the Big Ten champion first varsity eight. Brown rows in the five seat of the first varsity eight. She is a 2005 first-team All-Big Ten honoree.
