EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State wrapped up its 2005 regular season campaign beating Ohio University 2-1 at home on Sunday. The win improves the Spartans to 12-7. Next on the slate for State is the Big Ten Tournament. The Green and White will travel to Iowa City to face Ohio State on Friday afternoon, at 3 p.m.
State jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Ohio 17:42 into the game. Senior Michelle Huynh-Ba took a hard foul on a two-on-one breakaway, awarding the Spartans a penalty stroke. Senior Jessica Miller capitalized, freezing Bobcat goalie Jennifer Cote. Ohio managed to tie the score minutes before the half, on a Torri Albini goal at 30:20.
The game remained locked 1-1 until 67:48, when MSU finally snapped the stalemate. Hunyh-Ba found the back of the cage for her team-leading 14 goal of the season and her second game-winner in as many days to push the Spartans past OU, 2-1. Senior Breanna Harpstead recorded the assist.
MSU out shot Ohio 13-4 and held the penalty corner advantage, 11-4 on the day. Senior goalie Christina Kirkaldy made one stop in the win.
"Our seniors really showed what they were made of," head coach Michele Madison said. "It was an emotional day with all the parents and families here. We had some lapses, but they were able to pull through it. Now we turn our focus on Ohio State."
Michigan State is seeded sixth in the Big Ten Tournament and will face the third-seeded Buckeyes Friday at 3 p.m. in Iowa City. Ohio State will be fresh in Michigan State's mind, the two teams faced off just this past Saturday, with the Green and White taking a 3-2 win in East Lansing.
