Iowa City, Iowa - The Michigan State women's soccer team improved to 5-1-0 in Big Ten action, and 9-3-3 overall, with a 4-1 win over Iowa on Oct. 14. Senior forward Emma Harris (Portage, Mich.) scored a pair of goals, for the third consecutive game, and midfielder Erin Konheim (West Bloomfield, Mich.) tied the school's career-assist mark (21), with a helper on Harris' game-winning tally, to lead the Spartans.
Senior forward Dana Voorheis (Saginaw, Mich.) put the Green and White ahead early when her crossing attempt wound up in the back of the net, just 1:07 into the game. Iowa pulled even five minutes later when freshman Kelsey Shaw headed a corner kick past Spartan goaltender Nicole Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich.).
Harris would put Michigan State ahead for good in the 17th minute, with a header off of a Voorheis cross. Konheim was also credited with her fifth assist of the season on the play; it was the 21st assist of her career, pulling her into a tie with Caeri Thomas and Michelle Wise for first all-time at MSU.
The Spartans increased their lead to 3-1, early in the second half, when Harris struck for her second goal of the night. Sophomore midfielder Maureen Pawlak's (Commerce Twp., Mich.) set up the play with her service on an MSU indirect kick.
Forward Shannon Collar (Plano, Texas) notched the fourth Michigan State goal of the night, on a nearly identical play, in the 73rd minute. This time it was senior defender Nina Mastracci (Troy, Mich.) whose service found Collar, for the senior's second goal of the season.
Mastracci and fellow defenders Erin Doan (Dearborn, Mich.), Kelly Hannon (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Taryn Lee (Saginaw, Mich.) teamed up to limit Iowa to just one shot on goal in the game. Meanwhile, the Green and White peppered Hawkeye goalkeeper Erin MacIsaac with seven shot on target.
The Spartans will now head to Illinois to take on the Illini, Sunday afternoon, before returning home for their final homestand of the season on Oct. 21 and 23.
