
Spartan Freshman Advances To Final Round At Wolverine Invitational

The Michigan State women's tennis team continued action Saturday at the Wolverine Invitational. Freshman Ana Milosavljevic (Johannesburg, South Africa) advanced to the finals in the "Wolverine" Singles Flight.
"Blue" Singles Flight
Both Spartans lost in the main draw of the "Blue" flight as Michigan's Chisako Sugiyama defeated junior Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia), 6-4, 6-1 and Malena Remynse of Western Michigan defeated sophomore Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) in a tough 6-4, 6-7(4), 1-0(9) set.
In a battle of the Spartans in consolation play, Bader defeated Andrews, 6-4, 6-4.
Junior Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) went 1-1 today as she defeated Maria Calbeto of Marquette, 6-3, 6-2. Schnizter was later knocked off by UM's Allie Shafner, who defeated Schnitzer, 6-4, 6-2.
"Maize" Singles Flight
Freshman Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) was edged out of the main draw by Priyanka Parekh of WMU, 6-1, 7-5. Junior Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) defeated Cincinnati's Jenny Rowen in consolation play, 6-1, 6-2.
"Maize" Singles Flight
Milosavljevic came out strong against WMU's Colleen Mead in the first set, 6-2, as Mead fought back to take the second set, 3-6. MSU's Milosavljevic played hard to take the tie-break, 1-0(10) and to advance to the Sunday finals. Milosavljevic will face Bowling Green's Andrea Meister.
Doubles Action
In No. 1 doubles round-robin play, UM's Ali Shafner and Sugiyama defeated Andrews and Bader, 8-0 as Marquette's Maria Calbeto and Erin Watkins also defeated the Spartan duo, 8-3.
In No. 2 doubles round-robin action, Baron and Kebler picked up two wins Saturday as they defeated Michigan's Goldstein and Monica Sly, 8-6 and Marquette's Andrea Bukacek and Lisa Nguyen, 8-3.
Milosavljevic and Schnitzer picked up an 8-1 win over Cincinnati's Carling Arundel and Reasoner just after they recorded a victory over WMU's Mead and Reedhina Parekh, 8-4.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday (Oct. 2) at 9 a.m. in Ann Arbor.
