Women's Tennis Rolls Over Detroit Mercy

EAST LANSING, Mich. - - The Michigan State women's tennis team opened its spring home schedule at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Sunday morning with a 7-0 shutout of Detroit Mercy. MSU improves to 2-1 on the season, while Detroit Mercy falls to 0-1 to open its season.
"Last year we had a very good streak at home and it's good to start this year the same way," said coach Tim Bauer. "It's nice to get a win and feel comfortable at home."
The day began with both squads facing off in doubles action. The Spartans earned their doubles point quickly, notching 8-0 victories at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Freshman Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) and junior Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) earned an 8-3 victory over sophomore Ashley Cummins and freshman Aneta Maricevic in the other doubles match.
Junior Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) and freshman newcomer Aglaya Kokurina (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) also earned an 8-0 victory in an extra doubles match against freshman Natalie Arguello and sophomore Stephanie Hill.
In singles play, sophomore Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) beat freshman Annie Moore, 6-0, 6-3, in the No.1 spot, while Schnitzer cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 2 singles spot.
Doubles partners Baron and Kebler both won their singles match as well, with both posting 6-0, 6-0, tallies. Junior Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) won at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-3.
Freshman Marianne Eelens (Noord, Aruba) made her first appearance in singles play this spring at the No. 6 spot. Eelens defeated fellow freshman Kelly Davis in straight sets.
Kokurina went on to win her extra singles match, 6-1, 6-1, over junior Kaitlin McVehil as well.
"We're more concerned right now about executing than the scores," said Bauer. "Scores can be deceiving. On each court all of the girls had a game plan they all had to work, so even if they would have won, but didn't execute their game plan we would have been disappointed."
