EAST LANSING, Mich. - The MSU women's tennis team took the court tonight and improved to 4-1 this season with a 6-1 victory. The Spartans defeated Bowling Green, who dropped to 0-2.
The Spartans came out strong in doubles play, and took all three matches 8-4. No.1 doubles pairing, sophomore Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) and junior Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) defeated Bowling Green's top pair of junior Ashley Jakupcin and sophomore Jenna Nussbaum. Freshman tandem, Marriane Eelens and Ana Milosavljevic were also victorious, defeating senior Heidi Romer and freshman Kelsey Jakupcin.
"We've been working awfully hard on a system of doubles play," said coach Tim Bauer. "It's a very aggressive system that our team is picking up. They played it great for about the first six games. I think later Bowling Green raised their level of play, and so I think the combination us overplaying a little bit and them having their backs against the wall gave us a lapse of a couple of games."
At the No. 1 singles spot, Bader defeated Ashley Jakupcin, 6-0, 6-1. Jessica Baron also won her singles match, playing at the No.2 spot for the first time this year.
Andrews dropped her first set to Romer, 6-2, but battled back to take the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2, to win the match at No. 3.
"I wasn't playing well the first set," said Andrews. "I had to get some rhythm and some comfort and I started doing that during the second set. We practice sometimes for four hours, so the confidence to play that long is there."
Freshman Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) defeated senior Andrea Meister in the No. 4 spot by a score of 6-3, 6-0. Fellow freshman, Aglaya Kokurina (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) also came out on top in her match winning in straight sets at No. 6.
The Spartans only loss of the match came when freshman Marianne Eelens (Noord, Aruba) fell to Kelsey Jakupcin, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 5.
MSU women's tennis continues play on Jan. 28 at 1:00 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The Spartans will take on the Eagles of Eastern Michigan.
