EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team faced Eastern Michigan Saturday afternoon with the Spartans coming out on top, 6-1, to add another victory to their record. The Eagles drop to 0-1 to start their season.
MSU freshman Stephanie Kebler (Okemos, Mich.) cruised to a 6-4, 6-1, victory over sophomore Yana Parfenyuk at No. 4. Kebler also teamed with doubles partner Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) to beat sophomores Aditi Krishnan and Elizabeth Syrova, 8-4. Baron was also won her No. 2 singles match against Vanessa Frankowski in straight sets.
Spartan sophomore Christine Bader (Okemos, Mich.) downed Syrova at the No. 1 singles spot, 6-0, 6-3. Earlier in the day, Bader and junior Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) teamed together for a very competitive doubles match against Parfenyuk and Frankowski. MSU pulled ahead at the end to win the match, 8-8 (7-5).
"We were making some mistakes," said Andrews. "They were putting the ball down the line well, but we adjusted."
Andrews dropped her singles match in straight sets to Krishnan at No. 3 for Eastern Michigan's only victory on the day.
MSU freshman Ana Milosavljevic (Johannesburg, South Africa) had the match of the day though, coming back to win after losing her first set. Milosavljevic bounced back to beat junior Laura Fernandez, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4, at No. 6.
"Ana's match was a good example that tennis is a very mental battle," said MSU coach Tim Bauer. "That match was mental and physical because it was three long, hard-fought sets. She had to take the right game plan in her mind to win that match and eventually she figured it out and came up with a victory."
Milosavljevic also won her doubles match, teaming with freshman Marianne Eelens (Noord, Aruba) to beat Fernandez and Catherina Bestahorn, 8-1.
MSU will stay at home as it prepares to take on Louisville and Toledo at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Feb. 5, starting at 9:00 a.m.
