Five Spartans Collect Big Ten Awards For Field Hockey

EVANSTON, Ill. - Five Spartans collected conference honors on the eve of the Big Ten Tournament in Evanston, Ill., on Thursday, Nov. 4. Standout seniors Annebet Beerman and Veerle Goudswaard were unanimous First-Team All-Big Ten selections. Just four players from the entire conference were unanimous picks.
With 26 goals under her belt, Goudswaard not only leads the league in scoring, but ranks No. 1 in the nation as well. Eight goals behind Goudswaard, but having played in two more games than the Spartans, is Michigan's Jessica Blake, who ranks third in the conference and also earned first-team recognition. Goudswaard is also ranked first in the conference in points (56), with 13 more than Blake (43), who is at the number two spot.
In other Spartan accolades, junior goaltender Christina Kirkaldy and junior midfielder Michelle Huynh-Ba were both named to the second team, while senior back Michelle Carstens was honored with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Athletes recognized with the honor are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
The first round of the Big Ten Tournament kicks off on Friday, Nov. 5 and the Spartans match up against Indiana for their first game of the tournament at 2 p.m.
