PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Michigan State's field hockey team certainly made up for its struggles offensively in a 3-0 loss to North Carolina Saturday (Sep. 6), as the Spartans recorded nine goals on 30 shots to knock off Providence, 9-0, in the consolation game of the Temple Invitational Sunday (Sep. 7). Eight Spartans recorded at least one goal. State moves to 2-1 on the season while PU falls to 1-2.
With technical difficulties forcing the scoreboard to be unavailable in the first half and the referees keeping the official time, State decided not to worry about the clock. It lit up the field instead. Senior Alexandra Kyser (Columbus, Ohio) got things going with the first of five first-half MSU goals. Junior Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands), sophomore Jessica Miller (Carlsbad, Calif.), senior Sophie Rosmalen (Oss, Netherlands) and junior Michelle Carstens (Edwardsville, Ill.) added a goal each before the half ended.
Kyser would also post the first goal in second half as Rosmalen added a helper at the 33:45 mark. Freshmen Ashley Pernicano (San Diego, Calif.) and Ashley Smeltzer (New Castle, Del.) notched their first career goals with 15:45 and 14:40 left, respectively, to bring the score to 8-0. Senior Theresa Pusateri (Homewood, Ill.) completed State's scoring with her second of the year with 13:30 remaining.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, N.Y.) saw limited action as Providence got off only four shots to MSU's 30. Kirkaldy made one save in the first half. Lauren Hess gave up one goal at the 12-minute mark, making one save in the second half. State also outnumbered PU's penalty corners, 15-4.
Michigan State's nine goals were the most since a 12-1 outburst over Rutgers on Sep. 14, 2002. MSU will be on the road next weekend, traveling to Louisville Friday (Sep. 12) for a match with the Cardinals at 3 p.m., and a meeting with Southwest Missouri State Saturday (Sep. 13), also in Louisville, Ky.
