Kent, Ohio - The Michigan State field hockey team (1-0) opened the 2003 season Saturday afternoon, shutting out host Kent State, 2-0.
In a game that was evenly matched, the difference came from senior Theresa Pusateri (Homewood, Ill.) and freshman Jennifer Beeuwkes (The Hague, Netherlands) as both converted on scoring opportunities to lead the Spartans coming off the bench.
The two teams played through the first half to a 0-0 mark until newcomer Beeuwkes found the back of the goal just over one minute into the second half. Pusateri doubled the Spartans' lead at the 5:48 mark of the final stanza.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, NY) had six saves for the game, recording the seventh shutout of her career to lead the Spartan defense.
Saturday's win marks the eighth-straight regular-season victory for MSU.
The Spartans next travel to Philadelphia, Pa., where they will face North Carolina Saturday, September 6 and Temple or Providence Sunday, Sept. 7 in the Temple Invitational.
