Kim Schram Leads Volleyball To A 3-0 Sweep Of Iowa Saturday

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Kim Schram posted 16 kills, five block solos and five digs to led Michigan State volleyball to a 3-0 win against Iowa in Jenison Field House Saturday night. The Spartans move to 19-9 overall and 11-7 in the Big Ten with the 30-21, 30-23, 30-23 victory. Iowa is now 6-22 and 1-17 on the season.
Sara Villwock and Jenny Rood added 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Nikki Colson had 48 assists in the match. Villwock added a service ace and seven digs, Rood contributed two blocks and Colson had two kills on three attacks.
"We talked about having a business-like attitude in warm-ups and in the match," said head coach Chuck Erbe. "We respect our opponents, but at the same time, we needed to be concerned about what we were doing, not what they were. I had hoped the team would have a gut check. I felt everyone knew how important senior night is, and I know they all wanted to send our four seniors out on a positive note. This made it into a really special night. ."
The Spartans hit .306 as a team to Iowa's .147. Both teams posted seven blocks on the night, while Iowa out-dug MSU, 43-35. Megan Wallin and Michelle Kopka each had eight kills for the Spartans, while Mickey Davis had two service aces and six digs.
At one point in the third game, the Spartans went on a six-point service run from Villwock, which took the score from 8-6 to 13-6. That run was helped by a kill and four block solos, all from Schram.
"Tonight we knew we had to be emotionally stable," said Schram. "We had to take care of business and respect Iowa, but play our game. We just let our teamwork and our skill take care of itself. We managed our ups and downs pretty well all night, and we didn't get rattled by stupid mistakes that happened a couple times."
Iowa's Laura Simpson led the Hawkeyes with 13 kills and three blocks on the night.
Four MSU seniors finished their home careers Saturday, as Rood, Colson, Stephanie Knopp and Emmy Miller were honored prior to the match. MSU concludes its 2003 Big Ten season Friday, Nov. 28 at Northwestern and travels to Illinois for a match Saturday. Both matches begin at 8 p.m. EST.
