
Spartans Soar Past Falcons, 3-1, on Second Day of Kathy DeBoer Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State volleyball remained undefeated in 2025 with a 3-1 win over Bowling Green (25-20, 25-18, 24-26, 25-16) Friday night inside Jenison Field House on the second day of the Kathy DeBoer Invitational.Â
MSU moves to 9-0 with the win, while Bowling Green drops to 5-6 this season.Â
The Spartans hit .288 for the match and held the Falcons to .146 hitting. MSU outpaced Bowling Green in kills (51-to-43), service aces (8-6) and digs (50-49) and was just short of a season high in total blocks with 12, including a season-high eight solo blocks.Â
Junior outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska led the Spartans in kills with 14 on .281 hitting and added a team and season-high 14 digs for her second double-double in as many matches. She also provided a team-high three service aces and team-high four total blocks. Freshman outside hitter Bianca Mumcular recorded her first-career double-digit kill match with 12 and joined Staniszewska as the second Spartan with a double-double on the night with a career-high 10 digs. Mumcular also posted her best hitting so far this season, hitting .385 (12-2-26).Â
Senior opposite Evie Doezema just missed double digit kills, posting nine on .391 hitting. Sophomore middle blocker Carmen Waye added eight on .583 hitting, while sophomore middle blocker Breccan Scheck had five.Â
Junior libero Lia Schneider tied Staniszewska with a team-high 14 digs, while redshirt freshman setter Malayah Long dished out 34 assists and recorded eight digs.Â
MSU led for the entirety of the first set, holding the Falcons to just .026 hitting in the first frame. Bowling Green got within one at 15-14, but a Falcon service error followed by back-to-back kills from Staniszewska and Staniszewska solo block helped MSU to a 4-1 run to force a Bowling Green timeout at 19-15. Two-straight kills from the Falcons got Bowling Green within two again at 19-17 before another Staniszewska kill, a Bowling Green attacking error and a kill from junior middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig forced a second Bowling Green timeout at 22-18. Staniszewska recorded an ace out of the timeout before a Falcon attacking error got the Spartans to set point. Mumcular ended the set with her second kill of the match to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage, 25-20.Â
The Spartans got out to a 4-1 lead in the second set and forced a Bowling Green timeout at 10-5 after pushing their advantage to five. A service ace from Schneider capped off a 5-3 run for MSU to extend the lead to 15-8 at the media timeout. Bowling Green got within four at 18-14, but a Falcon service error, a kill from Long and a solo block from Mumcular helped bring the MSU lead back to seven. Kills from Staniszewska and a Falcon service error got the Spartans to set point at 24-18, and a kill from Doezema sealed the set, 25-18.Â
After a back-and-forth start to the third set, MSU took a three-point lead at the media timeout, 15-12, with a Doezema kill. The Falcons then went on a 5-2 run to tie the set at 17-17 before MSU fired off three-straight points from a Staniszewska kill, a block from Long and Waye and a Waye kill to retake a three-point lead, 20-17, and force a Bowling Green timeout. The Falcons took their first lead of the set at 21-20 after a 4-0 run out of the timeout and extended the lead to 22-21 after a Spartan attacking error. Back-to-back kills from Staniszewska tied the set back up at 22-22 and a kill from Waye followed by a kill from Doezema tied the set again at 24-24, but two-straight points from Bowling Green helped the Falcons steal the third set, 26-24.Â
Bowling Green took a 2-1 lead to start the final set before a 5-0 run capped off by a Mumcular kill gave the Spartans a 6-2 advantage in the fourth. Two errors from the Spartans gave Bowling Green a 11-10 lead, but a 5-1 run from MSU that featured a pair of kills from Staniszewska and kills from Waye and Doezema got the Spartans to a 15-12 lead at the media timeout. MSU continued its dominance out of the timeout, posting three-straight blocks, two solo from Stansizewska and an assisted block from Waye and Doezema, to force a Bowling Green timeout at 18-12. The Falcons could not get any closer than six for the rest of the set as Mumcular's 11th and 12th kills of night got MSU to match point and sealed the third set and match, 25-16. MSU hit a match-best .469 in the final set.Â
MSU wraps up the Kathy DeBoer Invitational and non-conference action on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. against SIUE inside Jenison Field House. MSU will celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the 1995 NCAA Final Four team to close out alumni weekend.Â
