Spartans Earn 73-56 Victory Over Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Senior Syreeta Bromfield scored 25 points and freshman Lindsay Bowen added 17 as Michigan State extended its home winning streak to seven with a 73-56 win against Michigan in front of 6,704 fans in the Breslin Center Thursday night.
The Spartans (12-7, 5-3 Big Ten) outscored Michigan 15-0 over the last 6:08 to pull away from a 58-56 lead. A pair of free throws by freshman Liz Shimek started the run, and Bromfield added six points during the decisive stretch.
"I'm proud of our team. We were a great defensive unit tonight," said MSU head coach Joanne P. McCallie. "I thought our team hung tough. We're very proud of the effort."
Sophomore Kristin Haynie had 12 points, seven assists and four steals for the Spartans, while junior Julie Pagel had a season-high 12 rebounds and three steals.
The Wolverines (11-7, 2-5 Big Ten) were led by Jennifer Smith with 18 points. Raina Goodlow had 15 and Tabitha Pool added 13.
The Spartans led 32-30 at the half thanks largely to Bowen, who scored 13 points by sinking all four of her shots, including three three-point baskets. Michigan outshot MSU in the first half, 53.8 percent to 37.5 percent, but MSU held the lead thanks to six three-point baskets in the opening peiod plus a plus-five turnover margin.
Bromfield hit another three to start the second half, and MSU led the rest of the way, although the lead didn't grow above eight until the final spurt. MSU pulled away thanks to 56 percent shooting in the second half (14-of-25) and an 18-12 edge on the boards. Michigan shot just 35.7 percent in the period.
For the game, MSU shot 45.6 percent, including 60 percent from three-point range (9-of-15) and 85.7 percent from the line (12-of-14). The Spartans committed a season-low nine turnovers while forcing 16, and had a 33-29 edge on the boards. Michigan finishing the game shooting 44.4 percent, including 5-of-15 from three-point range.
Michigan State had a 20-4 advantage in points off turnovers, and held a 13-3 lead in second chance points.
"It exciting to see our team play well," added McCallie. "It's good to see us pour it on down the stretch and play well together. I think (beating Michigan) is a good step for our program, but its just part of a lot of steps."
Michigan State is off until visiting Wisconsin next Thursday, Feb. 6.

* Julie Pagel's 12 rebounds pushed her over the 500 mark for her career. Pagel ranks 15th in MSU history with 506 career rebounds.
* Kristin Haynie surpasses 200 career assists during the game, and now has 205.
* Lindsay Bowen's three three-pointers give her 51 for the season, which is tied for fourth best in a single season in MSU history.
* Syreeta Bromfield scored 25 points for the second straight game, and now has four games this season with 25 or more points.
* The crowd of 6,704 was the eight largest in MSU history, and second largest this season.
