Men's Tennis Downed By No. 17 Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The No. 54 Michigan State men's tennis team, winner of four straight matches and six of its last seven, suffered its first loss since March 6 with a 7-0 defeat at the hands of No. 17 Minnesota Friday, March 29. MSU falls to 13-6 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten.
MSU's Chris Mitchell (So., Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Eric Simonton (So., Annandale, N.J.) picked up the lone Spartan win at No. 2 doubles, 8-6. The duo moved to 3-0 in their career against Big Ten teams. Juniors Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) and Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) fell 8-6 in a close match at No. 1 doubles.
Led by the No. 1 and No. 83 singles players in the nation, Minnesota (10-4, 3-1) swept the singles matches without giving up a set. Although falling at six singles, sophomore Mike Hodge (Grand Rapids, Mich.) played well once against for State. He reached a tiebreaker in each set, but could not advance any further.
Michigan State returns to action against rival Michigan, currently ranked No. 46, Wednesday, April 3, in Ann Arbor. The match will take place at the Varsity Tennis Center at 6 p.m.
