Spartans fall to No. 30 Michigan, 5-2

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Hoping to end its 10-match losing streak to No. 30 Michigan, the No. 66 Michigan State men's tennis team was only able to pick up two singles points and one doubles win on its way toward a 5-2 loss to the Wolverines. The Spartans fall to 13-7 overall and 1-4 in the Big Ten.
Junior co-captains Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) and Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) picked up their second conference win of the season at No. 1 doubles, defeating Brett Baudinet and Chris Shaya, 9-8(5). But Michigan won at No. 2 and No. 3 for the first point of the evening.
The Wolverines (11-5, 2-3) then controlled four of the six singles matches for the victory. MSU freshmen Cameron Marshall (Louisville, Ky.) and Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) won their 23rd and 21st singles matches, respectively. Marshall defeated David Anving at No. 6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. He is now 15-4 in his last 19 matches. Formanczyk also needed three sets to outlast Ben Cox, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 2. His record at this position now stands at 8-6. Junior Goran Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.) came up just short at No. 3, losing 6-4, 6-4, while McGuire also dropped a close match at No. 4, 6-3, 6-4.
Michigan State will travel to No. 14 Ohio State Saturday (April 6) and Penn State Sunday (April 7). The match with the Buckeyes will be the third straight against a ranked opponent for the Spartans and the fourth out of the last five. Both contests will begin at noon.
