COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State field hockey team opened the Big Ten Tournament with a bang, whitewashing Indiana, 3-0, in Columbus, Ohio, on Nov. 8. The second-seeded Spartans topped the seventh-seeded Hoosiers to advance to the semi-final round of the tournament. Michigan State, who finished the conference season with a 5-1 slate, are currently 19-2 on the season.
The scoring started almost as soon as the clock did. Michigan State got on the board as Julia Adams (Vancouver, British Columbia) tipped in a pass from Cynthia Martin (Vancouver, British Columbia) near the right side of the net to put the Spartans up by one less than one minute into the game. Jessica Miller (Carlsbad, Calif.) added to the Spartans' total one minute later, scoring on a pass from Judith van Haeringen (Hague, Netherlands).
After the initial offensive explosion by the Spartans, the pace slowed slightly. Although there was more midfield action, the Spartans continued to pound at the net. Michigan State attempted 22 shots in the opening 35 minutes, while Indiana managed just three.
Indiana's first serious scoring threat was halted by a defensive save from All-Big Ten first-team member Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands), who blocked a direct shot from an IU attacker. Less than a minute later, Beerman added to the Spartans' output, with a penalty corner goal. Beerman's team-leading 16th goal of the season came with the help of Adams and Jenny Sanders (Vancouver, British Columbia).
The Spartans entered the second half with a 3-0 lead and continued to dominate the play. Michigan State kept Indiana from crossing the midfield line until there was only six minutes left in the game and held the Hoosiers without a single shot in the final half. Throughout the game, the Spartans dominated the statistics, out-shooting the Hoosiers 28-3 and holding a 16-4 advantage on penalty corners.
Michigan State continues Big Ten Tournament action tomorrow (Nov. 9) at 2 p.m., facing the winner of today's Penn State/Northwestern game at North Turf Field on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
