EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 5 Michigan State field hockey team literally shut down Big Ten rival Northwestern, with a 2-0 victory on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. The Spartans held the Wildcats without a single shot attempt and without any penalty corners, as sophomore goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, N.Y.) recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
The Spartans (17-2, 4-1 Big Ten) got on the board in the 48th minute as sophomore Judith van Haeringen (Haugue, Netherlands) converted a penalty corner shot for her ninth goal of the season. Assisting van Haeringen for the game-winning mark were senior Vancouver, British Columbia natives Julia Adams and Jenny Sanders.
Michigan State added to its lead with a Michelle Huynh-Ba (Hockessin, Del.) goal in the 57th minute. van Haeringen assisted on Huynh-Ba's 11th goal of the season to give the Spartans the two-goal lead and the victory.
With the victory, the Spartans earned their 17th win of the season, which ties the 1979 squad for the most wins in a single season. Sanders and van Haeringen's assists were their 13th of the season and moved each of them into a tie for third on the single-season assist list with Sarah Wilson, who accomplished the feat in both 1996 and 1997. Sanders' helper also moves her into a tie for third-place on the program's career assists list with Wilson.
The Spartans will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 2, with a conference game against Ohio State at noon in Columbus, Ohio.
