EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 5 Michigan State field hockey team wrapped up Parents' Weekend with its 15th victory of the season, blanking Ball State, 3-0, on Sunday, Oct. 20, at the MSU Field Hockey Complex. The win marked head coach Michele Madison's 100th victory on the MSU bench, just three games after earning her 150th career win against Indiana (Oct. 12).
Michigan State earned its fifth-consecutive victory to improve to 15-2 on the season (3-1 Big Ten), holding off a pesky Cardinal team that had already upset two Top-10 teams in the month of October, including then-No. 9 Louisville and then-No. 7 Kent State.
Michigan State's passing attack highlighted the game, which saw both teams remain scoreless in the opening period until sophomore Judith van Haeringen (Hague, Netherlands) took the ball following a penalty corner attempt and sunk it in the cage for her eighth goal of the season as the horn signaled for halftime.
Senior Julia Adams (Vancouver, British Columbia) added her second goal of the weekend in the 52nd minute to give the Spartans an insurance goal. Adams' unassisted mark was her fifth of the season. Freshman Michelle Huynh-Ba (Hockessin, Del.) also tallied her second goal of the weekend, with an unassisted strike at the 67:44 mark. Huynh-Ba has accounted for nine goals in her freshman campaign.
Sophomore netminder Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, N.Y.) made six saves on the day, including two diving split saves. Five of her six stops came in the second period as BSU mounted a comeback, but Kirkaldy stuffed its offense for her fourth shutout of the season.
The Spartans outshot the Cardinals, 21-10, and held a 10-1 advantage on penalty corners.
Michigan State will play its last home game of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the MSU Field Hockey Complex. The 4 p.m. game will honor the Spartans' senior class and Vancouver, British Columbia natives - Adams, Cynthia Martin and Jenny Sanders.
