ANN ARBOR, Mich. - In its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, the seventh-ranked Michigan State field hockey team used three second half goals to defeat Kent State, 3-1, in first round action at Ocker Field Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10). MSU (16-5) will play Michigan (15-5), who topped North Carolina 5-2 earlier in the day, tomorrow afternoon (Nov. 11) at 2 p.m. in second round action with the winner earning a bid to the NCAA Final Four in Kent, Ohio.
After a scoreless first half, Kent State (13-8) got on the board with 23:45 remaining in the second half on a Kristen Johnson goal, her fourth of the season.
MSU bounced back quickly, scoring less than two minutes later. Maureen Halstead (Sr., North Dartmouth, Mass.) tipped in a pass from Julia Adams (Jr., Vancouver, B.C.) to tie the game at 1-1.
Kent State called a timeout at the 18:06 mark in the second half, and MSU never looked back. Four minutes after the timeout, the Spartans notched the game-winning goal as Alexandra Kyser (So., Columbus, Ohio) tapped in a shot from Annebet Beerman (Fr., Maarssen, Netherlands) off a corner attempt, giving MSU a 2-1 advantage.
MSU added an insurance goal with 6:34 left in the contest. Adams wrapped a pass around two KSU defenders to Halstead, who slapped a shot past KSU goalkeeper Jodi Lume to garner her second goal of the game. Halstead now has 13 goals on the season.
MSU goalkeeper Lauren Hess (So., Los Angeles, Calif.) had one save en route to her 16th victory of the season.
Michigan State returns to action tomorrow (Nov. 11) at 2 p.m. to face Michigan at Ocker Field in Ann Arbor. UM defeated MSU earlier in the season (Oct. 4), 2-1 in overtime, in East Lansing.
