EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team (7-6-2, 4-4-1) used a first-half goal by Kristi Arrington (Novi, Mich.) to defeat Minnesota (4-10, 3-7), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Old College Field.
Arrington found the back of the net on a corner kick situation. Tiffany Laskowski's (Troy, Mich.) corner kick found the feet of Heidi Lutz (San Ramon, Calif.), whose shot attempt was stopped by Minnesota goalie Julie Eibensteiner. Arrington gathered the rebound and put it past Eibensteiner from inside the six-yard box. This marked the third-straight game in which Arrington has scored a goal.
"Today was a must win game and we found a way to get the job done," said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "We are so very happy to have Kristi Arrington healthy and in the lineup. She is a fantastic finisher and made the difference in today's game."
A tough Spartan defense and solid goalkeeping preserved the MSU victory. Stacy Heller (Madison, Wis.) posted her fifth shutout of the season making eight saves. Heller also got help from her teammates on one play. In the 66th minute, Minnesota's Anna Nudell Lee had a shot with Heller out of position, but a Spartan defender made the save on the goal line.
Michigan State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. vs. Michigan in Ann Arbor in what will be MSU's final Big Ten contest of the year.
