Spartan Field Hockey Falls In Season Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Michigan State field hockey team dropped its season opener to Wake Forest, 6-0, on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Deacons struck early, scoring two goals in the game's first five minutes. Sophomore back Lynne Shenk took a cross from junior Jemima Cameron to score the first and only goal the Deacs would need for the season-opening victory. Freshman Kelly Doton found the back of the goal less than a minute later, firing an unassisted shot past Michigan State goalkeeper Mireille Evans.
Wake Forest continued that offensive pace in the first half, netting two goals at the 27:09 mark and, two minutes later, at the 25:04 mark. Cameron tallied her second assist of the day, feeding sophomore Heather Aughinbaugh for the Deacons' third goal. Jenny Everett, a first team All-American a season ago, scored the final goal of the first half.
Aughinbaugh earned her third point of the season with less than five minutes gone in the second half, crossing the ball to junior Jennie Shelton in front of the box for the Deacs' fifth goal of the game. Everett scored once more on a penalty stroke, lifting the ball over the outstretched arms of Evans to seal Wake Forest's first win of the season.
The Spartans will face Appalachian State on Sunday at 2 p.m., also in Winston-Salem.
