EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State did not need the opening doubles point this time, but it sure would have made things easier for the Spartans. Michigan State defeated Iowa 4-3 on Sunday, April 16 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Play was originally scheduled to take place outdoors, but the cold temperatures moved the contest indoors. MSU raised its record to 7-17/2-6.
Michigan State's five seniors competed in their last matches in E. Lansing. Three of them went out victorious. Iowa took the opening doubles point by winning two of the three contests. Ivica Primorac (Mosthar, Bosnia) and Francisco Trinidad (Mexico City, Mexico) won at No. 3 doubles. The senior team won for the second day in a row.
In singles play, Michigan State took four of the six flights to win by the final score of 4-3. Primorac won at No. 3, while Robert Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.) and Todd Townsend (E. Lansing, Mich.) were victorious at No. 2 and No. 6 singles. The match came down to the No. 4 singles contest where Trinidad and Iowa's Petar Mandic battled. After dropping the first set, Trinidad came back, with the help of the home crowd, to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Michigan State will conclude its regular season schedule next weekend when the Spartans travel to Ohio State on Saturday, April 22, and Penn State on Sunday, April 23. Both contests are scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
