Spartans Drop Opening Tennis Match of the Weekend

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State was defeated by Penn State 5-2 on Saturday at the Penn State Tennis Center. It was the first Big Ten victory of the season for the Nittany Lions. Penn State raised its record to 11-10/1-8, while the Spartans fell to 7-18/2-7.
Michigan State took an early lead, capturing two of the three doubles contests to record to the opening point. Ken Kigongo (Bradenton, Fla.) teamed with Mark Findling (Livonia, Mich.) at No. 1 doubles for a win, while seniors Francisco Trinidad (Mexico City, Mexico) and Ivica Primorac (Mosthar, Bosnia) were victorious at No. 3. It was only the second time all season the Spartans had won the doubles point in the Big Ten.
Kigongo was the only player from Michigan State to win his singles match. The senior defeated Steve van der Westhuyzen at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. Robert Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.) was the only other Spartan to take his match into the third set.
The Spartans will wrap up the regular season tomorrow as they travel to compete against Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio at 12:00 p.m. Next weekend, MSU will travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Big Ten tournament.
