EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State looked as if it might have the opportunity for two victories, but the Spartans had to settle for one. MSU lost its opening match to No. 53 Louisville 5-2, on Saturday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility, but won the night cap against Wright State 6-1. The split brings the Spartans' overall record to 5-4.
The Spartans picked up the doubles point against Louisville by winning two of the three matches. Unfortunately, MSU was only able to win one point in singles play. Michigan State started off impressively by capturing the first set in three of the singles matches, but was only able to win one of those matches. Four matches went into the third set with Ivica Primorac (Mosthar, Bosnia) winning his at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
The evening's match against Wright State started off the same way for Michigan State. The Spartans earned the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. MSU easily took the match by winning in five of the six singles contests. Four of the Spartans' victories came in straight sets. Primorac improved his record on the day to 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles. Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) earned his first dual match victory in singles play for MSU. The freshman also was also victorious at No. 3 doubles versus the Raiders.
Now, after having six straight dual matches at home, Michigan State takes to the road. The Spartans have seven consecutive dual matches on the road, along with the H.E.B. Collegiate Team Championships held in Texas, before returning to East Lansing. MSU travels to play Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia next Saturday and Sunday, February 26 and 27.
