East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team shut out Northwestern, 1-0, on Friday afternoon in East Lansing. MSU is now 8-2-2 overall (3-2-1 Big Ten), while Northwestern drops to 2-8-1 overall (1-5-1 Big Ten). With the victory, the Spartans remain undefeated at home with a record of 4-0 at Old College Field.
Neither team scored during the first half, although Northwestern had seven shots and Michigan State had four opportunities to score.
Michigan State scored the only goal of the game at the 59:45 mark of the second half, when freshman Erica Whatley (Lake Orion) scored the first goal of her career off an assist by freshman Trisha Kenny (Saginaw).
MSU senior goalkeeper Sara Kloosterman (Farmington) recorded another shutout, to give her 5.5 shutouts this season and 14.5 during her career. Kloosterman was credited with the MSU career shutouts record last week, after the Spartans' 0-0 tie with Indiana on Oct. 1.
Michigan State head coach Tom Saxton said he thought his team played a great second half. "We were a little disappointed in our execution during the first half, but we had better passing and combination play in the second half than we've seen this year," Saxton said.
Michigan State will return to action Sunday, Oct. 8 when they face in-state rival Michigan at 4:00 p.m. at Old College field.
