East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team shutout Michigan, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Old College Field. MSU is now 9-2-2 overall (4-2-1 Big Ten), while Michigan drops to 7-5-0 overall (5-2-0 Big Ten). The victory is the first MSU win over the Wolverines since 1994, when the Spartans defeated Michigan, 1-0, in overtime.
MSU got off to a sluggish start, but played an intense second half and scored the only goal of the game when sophomore Heidi Lutz (San Ramon, Calif.) scored for the second time this season on a header off a free kick from near midfield at 72:09. Junior Nicole LePlae (Brighton) made the assist on the goal, her fourth of the season.
"This was a big win for us because all of the teams in the Big Ten are so close (in the standings)." Lutz said. "The goal was off a free ball and it was perfectly placed from Nicole LePlae. I was open, and just got it past the keeper."
Michigan State senior goalkeeper Sara Kloosterman (Farmington) continued to build her MSU career shutouts record by holding the Wolverines scoreless, her third straight-shutout. Kloosterman, who had six saves during the game, has 6.5 shutouts this season and 15.5 in her career.
Although Michigan State was out-shot by Michigan, 15-9, MSU had seven shots in the second half, compared to U of M's five. The game marked the fifth-straight where the Spartans held their opponent scoreless during the second half.
"In preparation for this game, we talked about how we're having a good season and so is Michigan. This is what we do all of the work for," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "We had a shaky first half, but came together in the second half, and pulled it out."
Michigan State looks to continue its undefeated record at home (5-0) when it hosts Wisconsin on Friday, Oct. 13 at 4:00 p.m., and Minnesota on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Old College Field.
