Ann Arbor, Mich. - The No. 5 Michigan field hockey team defeated No. 19 Michigan State, 4-0, Friday afternoon at Ocker Field to extend its winning streak to six games over MSU. The Spartans fall to 10-8 (1-4 Big Ten) on the season, while the Wolverines clinch the No. 1 seed in next week's Big Ten Tournament and improve to 16-3 (6-0).
Kelli Gannon led the offensive attack for the Wolverines, scoring two goals and notching one assist to tally five points on the day. Her first goal came at the 20:58 mark in the first half and was followed by three Michigan goals in the second half.
Michigan outshot the Spartans 19-1 and held a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners.
MSU goaltender Mireille Evans (Soph., Castlegar, B.C.) had five saves for the Spartans, while UM goalie Molly Maloney posted one stop for the Wolverines.
Michigan State returns to action for its final regular season game on Sunday, October 29. The Spartans face the Indiana Hoosiers at 1:00 p.m. in Spartan Stadium.
