Oxford, Ohio - The No. 19 Michigan State field hockey team defeated Miami (OH), 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Miami Turf Field. MSU improves to 10-7 on the season, while the RedHawks fall to 4-13.
The Spartans jumped out on top at the 20:14 mark of the first half as Bridget Cooper (Jr., Winnetka, Ill.) slipped a penalty corner shot passed RedHawk goalie Marie Vaughn. Julia Adams (Soph., N. Vancouver, B.C.) and Lisa Mitchell (Jr., Toledo, Ohio) assisted on the goal.
MSU took a 2-0 advantage on a Cynthia Martin (Soph., Vancouver, B.C.) goal with just over four minutes remaining in the first period, her fourth goal of the season. Mitchell added her second assist on the score.
The RedHawks closed the gap to 2-1 as Meghan Phalen slammed home her fourth goal of the year with 2:01 left in the first half.
Maureen Halstead (Jr., N. Dartmouth, Mass.) extended MSU's lead back to two goals at the 12:40 mark in the second half. The goal was Halstead's fourth of the season.
Miami cut the lead to one less than one minute later on a goal by Angela Snedden, but could not pull any closer as it failed to convert two penalty corners late in the game.
Spartan goaltender Mireille Evans (Soph., Castlegar, B.C.) made two saves for MSU, while Vaughn posted seven saves for the RedHawks.
Michigan State returns to action on Friday, October 27 when it faces Michigan in Ann Arbor at 3:00 p.m.
