East Lansing, Mich. - The No. 16 Michigan State field hockey team defeated Ball State, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. MSU improves to 9-6 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 3-12.
Michigan State jumped out of the gates early, scoring two goals within the first five minutes. After stealing a Cardinal pass, Bridget Cooper (Jr., Winnetka, Ill.) led a breakaway, passing to a wide open Alexandra Kyser (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) who slapped a shot past BSU goalie Susan McDowell to give MSU a 1-0 lead only one minute into the game. Less than four minutes later, Julia Adams (Soph., N. Vancouver, B.C.) smashed a shot from about 10 yards out to put the Spartans up 2-0.
The Cardinals kept the Spartans in check the rest of the first half, however, and came back to cut the lead to one with a goal at the 30:28 mark in the second period. Heather Weinhold wrapped a pass around two MSU defenders to hit Betsy Quigg, who slid a shot past Spartan goalie Mireille Evans (Soph., Castlegar, B.C.).
Michigan State responded with an insurance goal with 8:25 remaining in the game. Sophie Rosmalen (Fr., Oss, The Netherlands) tipped in a rebound off a Cooper shot on a penalty corner attempt, giving the Spartans a 3-1 advantage. Cooper was credited with the assist.
Ball State again cut the lead to one on a goal by Kirsty Houghton at the 6:32 mark, but the Spartan defense shut down the Cardinal attack for the remainder of the game to preserve the victory.
The Spartans dominated most of the game, holding an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners and outshooting the Cardinals 26-8.
Evans had four saves for MSU, while McDowell posted 16 stops for BSU.
Michigan State returns to action Friday, Oct. 20 when it faces Ohio State at 3:00 p.m. in Columbus.
