EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomore Maureen Halstead (N. Dartmouth, Mass.) scored twice and sophomore Marleen Tuip (Eindhoven, Netherlands) assisted on both goals as the Michigan State field hockey team defeated Providence, 5-3, this afternoon at Spartan Stadium. With the win the Spartans improve to 5-1, while Providence drops to 0-5.
Providence took the lead early in the first half on a goal by Carrie Leoncavallo, only to have MSU tie the score with 20:26 remaining in the half on Halstead?s first goal of the game. The Friars regained the lead just under three minutes later, but Halstead netted her second goal with nine seconds remaining in the half to send the game to halftime tied 2-2.
Michigan State took control after the intermission, scoring two goals in the first 2:28 of the second half to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Sanne van Nouhuys (Bilthoven, Netherlands) score her team-leading eighth goal of the season 1:05 into the half and sophomore Jessica Wheeler (San Diego, Calif.) got the eventual game-winner just 1:23 later. Sophomore Bridget Cooper (Winnetka, Ill.) added the final MSU goal with 20:46 remaining in the second half.
?We underestimated Providence a little at the beginning of the game,? said MSU head coach Michele Madison. ?We started out quickly in the first half on the attack, but couldn?t stop them up the middle. Once we were able to do that, though, we got the ball up the sides and played well.?
The Spartans continue their five-game homestand Saturday at 1 p.m. against Central Michigan, then open the Big Ten season against Michigan Wednesday, Sept. 22 against Michigan at the Duffy Daugherty Indoor Facility.
