Field Hockey Shuts Out Louisville, 2-0, At Temple Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State field hockey team defeated Louisville, 2-0, in the consolation game of the Temple Invitational this afternoon in Philadelphia. Sophomore Sanne van Nouhuys (Bilthoven, Netherlands) tallied both goals for MSU, giving her a team-leading seven goals in five games this season. Michigan State is now 4-1 on the season.
The Spartans went ahead early, as van Nouhuys scored her first goal of the game with 25:56 remaining in the first half on an assist by fellow Netherlands native sophomore Marleen Tuip (Eindhoven, Netherlands). MSU outshot Louisville, 12-2, in the first half and 21-4 for the game.
Tuip also provided the assist on van Nouhuys' second goal with 16:34 remaining in the second half. van Nouhuys leads Michigan State with 14 points this season, while Tuip stands second on the team with two goals and three assists for seven points.
Freshman goalkeeper Mirielle Evans (Castlegar, British Columbia) also shone for MSU, recording five saves for her first career shutout and lowering her goals-against average to 1.63.
Michigan State returns home this weekend to begin a five-game homestand against Providence and Central Michigan. The Spartans take on Providence Sept. 17 at 4 p.m., and face the Chippewas the following afternoon, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m. Both games are at Spartan Stadium.
