East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State field hockey player Debbie White (Harvey's Lake, Pa.) has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in leading the Spartans to a pair of season-opening victories last weekend. The junior back anchored a Spartan defense that yielded just three goals in road wins over Ball State (5-2) and Miami (5-1).
Against Ball State, White marked Sally Northcroft, the 1998 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and the second leading scorer in the nation, and didn't allow her to score from the field. She was also instrumental in holding Miami to just four shots in Sunday's victory. White held the RedHawks' top offensive player without a shot and a goal.
The Harvey's Lake, Pa., native also contributed to MSU's offensive outburst with a pair of assists.
Michigan State (2-0 overall) makes its home debut on Friday, Sept. 3 when it hosts Northeastern at 4 p.m., at Spartan Stadium.
