Muncie, Ind. - The Michigan State field hockey team opened its 1999 season with an impressive 5-2 victory over Ball State today in Muncie, Ind. The win snapped the Cardinals' 21-game home winning streak.
"This is a big win against a good team," MSU coach Michele Madison said. "We fought hard to come back after being down twice and then we finished it off together. This is a great confidence builder for a young team."
Ball State got on the board first with a goal at the 26:55 mark of the first half, but 1998 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Bridget Cooper (Winnetka, Ill.) scored the equalizer less than three minutes later.
The Cardinals took the lead again just minutes later with a goal off a direct corner to make it 2-1. Sophomore Sanne van Nouhuys (Bilthoven, Netherlands) tied the score with 18:57 left in the first, while freshman Julia Adams (North Vancouver, British Columbia) tallied the game-winner with 14:06 left in the opening half to give MSU a 3-2 lead.
The Spartans iced the victory in the second half with goals by van Nouhuys and sophomore Marleen Tuip (Eindhoven, Netherlands).
Freshman Mireille Evans (Castlegar, British Columbia) made her first career start in goal and made two saves to earn the victory.
The Spartans will travel to Oxford, Ohio, to face Miami on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m. MSU makes its home debut on Friday, Sept. 3 when it hosts Northeastern at 4 p.m., at Spartan Stadium.
