Volleyball Shoots Down Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Michigan State?s inconsistent play continued against the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City on Saturday, Oct. 30, but the Spartans pulled out a 3-0 victory, 15-11, 15-10, 15-5. MSU hit just .181 while the Hawkeyes hit .019.
Erin Hartley tied her career high in blocks ? set earlier in the in the season against Iowa ? with seven. Angela Morley finished up a solid weekend with seven kills on .778 hitting and a match-high nine blocks.
Iowa jumped out to a 2-0 lead before MSU countered and opened up an 8-3 lead. The Hawkeyes regrouped and got the score to within one at 11-10 before self-destructing. Michigan State got three of its last four points on Hawekey hitting errors.
State looked to have things well in hand in game two as it cruised to an 8-0 lead. Iowa fought back, though, and erased the deficit. Tied 10-10, the Spartans stepped up their game and used a kill and block solo by Sarah Gustin to close out the game. Morley had six blocks in the game.
The offense fired a little better in the third game as the Spartans hit .200 to UI?s -.088. The Spartans jumped out to a 6-2 lead and coasted to a 15-5 win.
Michigan State is now 16-8 overall, 6-6 in the Big Ten. Iowa falls to 4-15 overall, 3-9 in the conference. The Spartans return to action next weekend against Wisconsin and Purdue at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5-6.
