Volleyball Traps Badgers

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State used good serving and smart passing to overwhelm Wisconsin, 16-14, 15-9, 15-12 on Friday, Nov. 5 in Jenison Field House. The Spartans raised their record to 17-8 overall and 7-6 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin falls to 15-8 overall, 8-5 in the conference.
Sophomore outside hitter Erin Hartley led all hitters with 17 kills and added 14 digs, three blocks and two service aces. Junior outside hitter Sarah Gustin added 16 kills and eight digs while redshirt freshman middle Angela Morley tagged nine blocks. Morley has tallied nine or more blocks in four of her last five matches.
?Angela is just amazing,? said MSU head coach Chuck Erbe. ?She?s been the biggest and best surprise of the entire season. She?s really smart on the floor, makes good reads and smart decisions. She adds a good dimension to our team.?
Sophomore outside hitter Maren Witzel tied her career high with seven blocks to go with seven kills and eight digs. Setter Vicki Basil was in solid control of the offense, ending the evening with 51 assists, 12 digs, three kills and two blocks. Junior middle Jessica Sanborn was her usual, consistent self with 13 kills, 11 digs and four blocks.
Four Wisconsin players had double figure kills led by Jenny Maastricht with 14. Erin Byrd led the Badgers with 15 digs while Kelly Kennedy contributed 10 kills eight blocks and six digs. Wisconsin?s two setters split time as Morgan Shields had 26 assists and Lizzy Fitgerald 19.
MSU outhit Wisconsin .206-.124 and outblocked the Badgers 15-14.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Nov. 6 in Jenison Field House against Purdue at 7 p.m.
