EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State field hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 overtime win against Northwestern Sunday afternoon in Evanston, Ill. MSU improves to 9-8 overall, 2-6 in the Big Ten, while Northwestern falls to 4-12, 0-9. The Spartans got on the board first thanks to an unassisted goal by junior Adrienne Miroslaw (Dallas, Pa.) at the 29:12 mark of the first half. The goal is the first of the season for Miroslaw. Sophomore Marleen Tuip (Eindhoven, Netherlands) then gave MSU a 2-0 lead when she converted a pass from fellow Netherlands native sophomore Sanne van Nouhuys (Bilthoven, Netherlands) at 18:47 of the first half.
Northwestern closed the gap to 2-1 with only 2:25 remaining before halftime on a goal by Kristy Whitman. The teams played scoreless field hockey until the Wildcats? Colleen Hotz tied the score at two with just 1:47 remaining in regulation.
van Nouhuys tallied the game-winner when she scored her team-leading 12th goal on a direct corner with 11:38 left in the overtime period. The goal is van Nouhuys? third game-winner of the season and lifts MSU to 2-1 this season in overtime contests.
